ALS United North Carolina’s Response to Proposed NIH Funding Cuts

ALS United North Carolina is in strong opposition to all of the proposed budget cuts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that could impact ALS research. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a devastating and fatal disease with no cure. Continued funding at every level is essential to advancing research, developing treatments, and ultimately finding a cure.

We urge our Senators and Representatives to protect and prioritize NIH funding for ALS research, to call for a reversal of the “Supplemental Guidance to the 2024 NIH Grants Policy Statement: Indirect Cost Rates.” This policy would cap the coverage of indirect costs to 15% of the grant, which would drastically harm ongoing research studies and stall progress toward new treatments for ALS.

Every dollar invested in ALS research brings us closer to breakthroughs that could extend and improve the lives of those affected. NIH funding has played a crucial role in identifying potential treatments, understanding the disease’s progression, and supporting clinical trials. Continued momentum depends on sustained federal investment. Reducing NIH funding would not only hinder ongoing projects but also discourage future innovation and limit access to potential life-saving therapies. Patients, families, and researchers cannot afford these setbacks.

ALS United North Carolina will continue to advocate for the entire ALS Community at every level of government. We invite you to share your story and make your voice heard.
