April 2025 Newsletter

In celebration of a fearless ALS warrior, we are proud to announce the launch of Martha Whitaker’s book, Grandma’s Voice, A Children’s Guide to ALS. Illustrated by her granddaughter Frankie. Published just days before Martha’s passing on March 18, the family hopes to honor her memory by bringing comfort and hope to all families affected by ALS.

Grandma’s Voice is a heartfelt and compassionate children’s book that gently explores the impact of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) from a child’s perspective. Through the eyes of a young girl, the story follows her journey of understanding and navigating her Grandma’s diagnosis and the changes it brings. As Grandma’s voice fades and her abilities decline, the child learns about love, resilience, and the importance of cherishing memories. This story offers a sensitive introduction to a difficult topic, showing how families can support each other through hardship and how love endures even when words can no longer be spoken. Filled with tenderness and hope, Grandma’s Voice is an empowering book for young readers and their families to have meaningful conversations about illness, loss, and the bonds that hold us together.

This Spring, it is our goal to raise $475,000 between the Triangle, Down East, and Winston- Salem WALK ALS events. As a reminder, WALK ALS is the number one way to unite and fundraise for people living with ALS in North Carolina. Each year, fundraising through the Walk supports the ALS community through our Care Services Programs and drives us further toward a cure for ALS. Our Equipment Loan Closet, Care Grant, Support Groups, and more, are all supported through dollars raised at the walk.

You can be a part of the mission by registering to fundraise, donating to a walk, or supporting a walk team.

2025 marks 25 years of walking together to cure ALS! This year, we are honoring 25 years of our Walk program. In 25 years of walking together across the state of North Carolina, we have raised critical funds to support those living with ALS and for research to find a cure for ALS. For 25 years, we have walked side by side in solidarity to show that no one is alone in the fight against ALS. Help us honor each of you this year, because without each of you, we would not be able to honor the 25 years that we have walked together!

Were you a part of an original walk team in 2025? Have you walked for 10+, 15+, or 20+ years? Help us showcase your commitment and our shared history together! Email walk@alsnc.org with pictures from the past, anecdotes about your time walking, and any historical knowledge you may have.

All year long, we cannot wait to highlight the individuals, teams, sponsors, and honor those who have passed from ALS, as they are why we are still walking for a cure.
